This fall of 2016 Kennesaw State University Student Affiliates of the American Chemical Society has taken a giant leap towards increasing the professionalism, inclusiveness, involvement, and the education of chemistry within the chemistry and biochemistry department. The increase in the number of leaders than previous years has led to many successful seminars, social events, webinars, and fundraisers and resulted in quadrupled number of participants in these events than last semester. The newly elected leaders reached out to KSU students, especially those in the chemistry-related fields, at the SAACS BBQ where grilled foods and music introduced SAACS to new faces and welcomed the returning members. KSU SAACS collaborated with careers and internships advisers to invite students to resume sessions. The adviser presented on resume writing and gave career tips. The club also hosted the ACS webinar Chemistry Code for Success and taught networking skills and etiquettes as well as answer questions about job outlooks for chemistry majors. In October a KSU alumnus experienced in the pharmaceutical, oil, and multiple other industries held a seminar for SAACS members and those interested to guide, explain, and advise many who were unsure of what to do with their degrees. Many were impressed by her emphasis on the importance of taking advantage of SAACS-hosted events and opportunities and joined the club. The organization recognizes the importance of public access to good education and the promotion of science to young students. To raise money for a local elementary school KSU SAACS has sold candles made in beakers and as well as ACS study guides to fund future club expenses. Several students volunteered to make beautiful candles and were stationed to sell the items. This event promoted bonding, involvement, and the inclusiveness among the members. On November 10th the club will lead a tour of local brewery with around 15 students to observe the quality control and production process of the beer. The trip will educate the students of the diverse jobs one could have as a chemist and give a preview of one environment of QC. KSU SAACS believes that it accomplished its goals this fall by fostering professional knowledge of chemists to members, building a bigger yet more intimate group culture, financially supporting a local school, boosting the chapter’s size, and encouraging commitment to the organization.
