American students are taught that they "should not plagiarize" from an early stage of their education. While, to many educators, this seems to be an easy concept to understand, a generation of students accustomed to retweets and reposts may not understand all of the rules and ethical norms of scientific communication. This presentation highlights the greatest struggles that college and graduate students face when trying to appropriately use and reuse published material and offers possible methods of teaching such concepts as the definition of general knowledge, proper citation practices, appropriate use of figures and images, and dual publication, critical things that the authors of the future must understand if they are to succeed in science.
