Although humans receive most of their chemical exposure to gases and particles indoors, the indoor chemical environment has been studied far less extensively than that outdoors.  The focus indoors has been strongly upon emissions from building materials and transfer rates of air from the outdoor envelope.  More recently, the important role that humans play in the indoor environment has been recognized.  In this talk, results from initial sampling experiments conducted in indoor environments will be presented that used a suite of on-line aerosol and gas measurements (CIMS, AMS, particle sizes and numbers, standard trace gases).  These observations are being supported by process-level laboratory experiments to study the underlying chemistry, with a focus on multiphase reactions that occur in these spaces that have such high ratios of surface area to volume.  Reaction systems of interest include the potential for chlorine chemistry affecting the oxidant levels indoors and the nature of a variety of indoor combustion sources.
