Mentoring is a unique relationship where an experienced person (the 'mentor') guides a novice (the mentee) in a field in which the mentee hopes to gain expertise.  Many disadvantaged youths are positively impacted through mentoring, although minorities continue to be underrepresented in the STEM field.  The children of new immigrants are a group who face unique challenges. Many times their parents and immediate families are unfamiliar with the educational systems in the US, and are thus unaware of the opportunities available to their children.  In this talk we will describe how the Maize foundation allows us to positively impact students to make inroads in the STEM field by matching them with mentors who often have gone through similar struggles.
