Raman spectroscopy is a particularly suited technique to monitor catalysts and catalysis, we present the application of Raman spectra to investigate the state of catalyst at work as a powder and shaped into honeycomb forms. This approach allows understanding the state of supported oxides and mixed oxides during several reactions, like alkane oxidation or ammoxidation or during environmental remediation of pollutants (NOx, VOCs). The combination of Raman and infrared operando characterization is most convenient to connect changes is catalyst structure, more apparent to Raman spectroscopy, and surface adsorbed species, more apparent to infrared spectroscopy. This enable tackling activation and deactivation phenomena as well as knowing the state of a catalyst at work. Similar approach allows monitoring the progress and state of hydride materials for hydrogne release. In addition to the operando studies, Raman can provide real time monitoring during reactions in the liquid phase, which enables knowing reaction progress and provides insight into mechanistic aspects of the reaction, as we show for liquid phase reactions with glycerol valorization and cyclohexene epoxidation.
