High abundances of submicron aerosol are widespread across the developing world and give rise to extreme incidences of urban and regional air pollution and have a significant influence on regional climate.  Urban, industrial, and solid fuel burning both from wildfires and residential burning for heat and cooking represent major contributions to the aerosol load and secondary processes may contribute substantially.  In this paper we present results from a range of field measurement studies we have conducted recently from both ground and aircraft platforms across South America, West Africa, India and China using Aerosol Mass Spectrometers and Time of Flight Chemical Ionisation Mass Spectrometers.  We identify and quantify the main sources and processes and show the influence of these on regional air quality and the regional radiative budget.<br/>
