The Potential Aerosol Mass (PAM) can be defined as the maximum aerosol mass that the oxidation of precursor gases produces. Over the past decade, the chamber designed to measure PAM has been successfully applied not only to the atmosphere but also to the laboratory for studying aerosol aging and the resulting changes in aerosol properties. By the work of many, we have learned quite a lot about the strengths and limitations of the PAM chamber for both field observations and laboratory simulations of atmospheric oxidation processes. In this talk we will discuss these strengths and limitations and will explore ideas for improving the performance of the PAM chamber and for increasing its application to real-world aerosol issues.<br/>
