Terpyridine (tpy) ligands are well-known for their ability to host various transition metal ions.1−2 A weak fluorescent Zinc complex was reported as a good “turn-on” fluorescent sensor for pyrophosphate (PPi).3 In comparison to its structural analogue that respond to several phosphate species4, the PPi selectivity is assumed to be associated with a dimethylamine substituent (a strong electron-donating group). In order to gain further understanding on the electronic impact of a ligand substituent, low temperature fluorescence is used to evaluate the zinc binding-induced fluorescence quenching on tpy ligands.5 Fluorescence at -198° allows detection of the spectra from the locally excited state that involves a minimum of intramolecular charge transfer (ICT) interaction. In comparison with the fluorescence at room temperature, one can thus approximate the extent of ICT between donor and acceptor groups. The presentation will also discuss the synthesis of a bisterpyridine ligand and its zinc complex, in which two terpyridine fragments were linked with a short π-conjugated moiety for their synergistic intramolecular interaction.
