Synthesis of solid state compounds normally requires high temperature and extended period. Even under these severe conditions, the products are in many cases not pure and not the intended ones. Under certain circumstances, however, the synthesis can be targeted and carried out under mild condition with high yield. We have carried out theoretical studies and tried to understand the factors that govern this type solid state reactions. The case study is the synthesis of two one-dimensional compounds K2MSbS4H (M = Zn, Cd) at 473 K. The compounds crystallize in the triclinic space group P-1. Their structures feature one-dimensional [M2Sb2S8H2]4- double chains along the crystallographic a axis.
