Transition-metal-catalyzed decarboxylative coupling reactions have gained considerable attention over the past decade as an efficient route to form biaryls. However, there are currently no examples of the catalytic oxidative decarboxylative arylation of unactivated C-H bonds that employ a broad scope of (hetero)aromatic acids. We have recently discovered the first nickel-catalyzed oxidative decarboxylative arylation of unactivated C-H bonds. This transformation enables the coupling of a broad scope of heteroaromatic acids and <i>ortho</i>-substituted benzoic acids, a scope that has not been achieved in previous oxidative decarboxylative coupling transformations. This talk will focus on the reaction development and preliminary mechanistic studies of this system.
