Perylene diimides (PDIs) exhibit excellent redox properties, environmental stability, and high charge mobilities, making them popular non-fullerene acceptors in organic photovoltaics (OPVs). While several studies have combined PDIs to achieve a variety of geometries, there has been little focus on tailoring the optoelectronic properties of PDI itself. Recently we have demonstrated the facile and catalyst-free <i>ortho</i>-functionalization of the PDI core. The presented work will focus on this method as a means to further functionalize PDI, altering its energy levels and granting access to a new series of acceptors. Non-fullerene acceptors based on modified PDI will be presented, along with their optical and electrochemical characterization and incorporation into OPV devices.
