Controlled and living polymerization techniques have have been widely adopted for the synthesis of all variety of polymer-based materials, including hybrid organic/inorganic composites. In this presentation, the design and synthesis of block copolymers bearing functional groups to guide the growth of inorganic materials, including block copolymer/metal nanoparticle hybrids, will be discussed. Block copolymers with alkyne-functional blocks for the preparation of cobalt nanoparticles have been synthesized by the direct polymerization of alkyne-functional monomers from both molecular initiators and macroinitiators. The design, synthesis, and characterization of these and other hybrid materials will be discussed.
