Alpha-tetrasubstituted amines are more stable and can display higher activities than their less-hindered counterparts. Whereas many catalytic methods exist to combine aldehydes, amines, and nucleophiles to access alpha-trisubstituted amines, the more crowded variant generally requires the synthesis and isolation of the appropriate ketimine followed by reaction with stoichiometric organometallic nucleophiles. New green, solvent-free methods efficiently form alpha-tetrasubstituted amine building blocks in a single, catalytic tandem reaction involving either condensation or hydroamination.
