Molecular interactions at interfaces are both exceedingly important and often difficult to charaterize. We have developed an array-based silicon photonic microring resonator technology and have applied it to studying complex interfacial (bio)chemical interactions. In particular, we have utilized arrays of phospholipid bilayer Nanodiscs having varying lipid and protein content to probe the binding of blood coagulation proteins at model cell membrane interfaces. We have also investigated molecular partitioning into polymer brushes grown from the sensor surfaces via atom transfer radical polymerization and observe differentional interactions according to complementary molecular interactions and the addition of additives such as plasticizers. In general, this array-based, label-free technology is attractive for multiparametric studies of complex binding interactions of model interfaces.
