Synthetic barbiturate receptors have been used for many applications due to their high binding affinities for guests with complementary hydrogen bonding interactions. Use of such receptors has permeated diverse fields of chemistry ranging from supramolecular chemistry to materials chemistry. To further enable use of similar self-assembly strategies in host-guest chemistry, we recently investigated how bifurcation and inclusion of disfavorable steric interactions influence barbiturate binding in deconstructed Hamilton receptors. Using insights into the roles of pre-organization and steric interactions on guest binding, we have utilized related motifs to access different systems including barbiturate-binding phosphine-containing ligands and other host-guest systems, all of which self-assembly upon addition of suitable guests. This presentation will focus on these and related multicomponent metal-containing barbiturate systems as well as other host-guest systems derived from bifurcated barbiturate binding motifs.
