Controlling excited state reactivity leading to stereo-enriched products has presented challenges due to the short lifetimes of the reactive species generated during light initiated processes. We have been interested in developing strategies for controlling the stereochemistry of products where the reactants reach the excited state upon UV and/or visible light irradiations. This presentation will highlight our methodology of employing UV and/or visible light for performing photoreactions with excellent control over reactivity and selectivity. Based on photochemical and photophysical investigations, it will also highlight the role of restricted bond rotations in influencing the excited state chemistry and provide a mechanistic rationale for the observed reactivity in different systems.
