The title process involves the capture of thermally generated benzynes by two complementary and synergistic trapping reagents. The products typically possess substantial structural complexity. We have uncovered a considerable variety and number of such reactions, and selected examples will be presented in this lecture. One (exotic) case is the trapping of the HDDA benzyne derived from tetrayne <b>1</b> by the tertiary amine nitrogen atom in brucine, zwitterion protonation by the phenolic OH in estradiol, and ring-opening of the brucine C-ring by the phenoxide counterion.
