Over the past decades, transition metal catalyzed aerobic oxidation reactions have emerged as attractive approaches for the effective synthesis of organic molecules. Although tremendous progress has been made towards palladium- and copper-catalyzed aerobic oxidation reactions, there is less work demonstrating the use of molecular oxygen as the terminal oxidant the cobalt-catalyzed reactions. We have recently developed a new Co-catalyzed aerobic oxidative cyclization of 2-aminophenol with isonitriles. This poster will focus on the development of this base-free, ligand-free, and additive-free cobalt-catalyzed aerobic oxidative cyclization reaction. Preliminary mechanistic insights and the extension of this protocol to catechol and 2-aminoaniline will also be discussed.
