Efficient and fast catalysis of the multi-proton, multi-electron reactions requires a careful balance of the thermochemistry of key intermediates along with ligand design elements that lower transition state barriers. Our apporach is to use modular transition metal complexes and quantitative measurements to understand how to control the energy of catalytic intermediates. Additionally, we modify the secondary coordination sphere of ligands to gain insight into how to lower reaction barriers by mediating proton transfer with electron transfer.
