Cellulose nanofibrils can be used as reinforcing agents to produce plastics that are environmentally friendly and biodegradable. Previous investigations published by our group revealed that acid strength and biomass source strongly influenced the resulting thermal and structural properties of the extracted cellulose crystals.  Here we report on a systematic investigation of the feasibility of extracting nanocellulose from different biomasses (cotton, wheat straw, and Hibiscus sabdariffa) by acid hydrolysis.  Under this method, chemical pretreatment methodology, alkaline extraction, and bleaching were included in the extraction process.  Compositional and structural changes were performed using Fourier Transform Infrared Spectroscopy to monitor the removal of non-cellulosic constituents. XRD and FTIR were used to monitor the crystallinity and composition, respectively, of the cellulose upon treatment via both extraction methods.
