We have recently developed a new pincer ligand that combines a central diarylboryl donor with flanking phosphines. This presentation will focus on a series of transformations at group 9 metal centers that are made possible by the involvement of a non-innocent boryl central donor. The three-coordinate, metal-bound boryl can act as a Lewis acid and bind to the heteroatoms in the substrates. In some cases, such as with the pyridine family, such interactions can be harnessed to direct the metal-based C-H activation to a specific site in the substrate. We will discuss the mechanistic questions in these reactions and the progress towards leveraging the observed selectivity in catalysis.
