Polyphosphazenes are attractive polymers for use as gas separation membranes, combining tunable permeation properties with inherent chemical and thermal stability. Use of the materials in these application has been hampered by and inability to produce polyphosphazene capable of meeting mechanical requirements. In an attempt to improve both the gas separation properties and mechanical properties of membranes made from these materials, we have prepared three types of nanocomposites based on a promising polyphosphazene. Separation properties of the composite membranes for mixtures of CO2 and N2 were then examined. Substantial enhancement of membrane properties was observed. The highest permeability for the nanocomposite polyphosphazene was 1600 Barrer with a separation factor of 44. The membranes also showed marked improvements in mechanical properties.
