When it comes to communicating the value of chemistry, context is important. What does the audience already know? want to know? need to know? As the ACS’s Science Policy Fellow, I help the Society’s External Affairs and Communications team promote policies that support the practice of chemistry and its ability to deliver novel solutions to global challenges. While similar to other types of outreach, communication with policymakers requires specific tactics and points of emphasis. Based on my personal experiences, I will highlight some of the similarities and differences involved in talking about science with policymakers versus doing the same with students, scientists, and the general public.
