Most of us have a favorite analytical technique; convinced of its capability, we enthusiastically search for measurements to perform that make a difference.  My long standing devotion to fluorescence is no different, but I have learned the value of stepping away from the lab.  I will talk about drivers for biosensor systems integration in terms of considerations in putting the system together, providing several very different examples.  I will describe a path for moving an idea to a commercial product, without starting a company.  And finally, I will describe how taking advantage of an unexpected opportunity while developing a tissue-on-chip model led to “fixing broken hearts”.<br/>
