Thin polymer films are used in a large variety of applications including filtration membranes for gas and water separation, modification of biological interfaces on devices and lithography. Methods for creating thin films on substrates encompass both bottom-up and top-down construction techniques, each with their own advantages and drawbacks including reliance on specific chemistry, variation in film density and laborious preparation procedures. We have previously reported the technique of Continuous Assembly of Polymers – a facile technique for creating highly cross-linked films in a bottom up fashion via polymerizable side groups dispersed throughout the polymer chain from catalysed substrates. The film growth can be re-initiated and repeated to access multi-layered films by accessing pendant moieties unused in the previous film formation step. This work focuses on the patterning of films with techniques including micro-contact printing on relevant substrates in order to utilise the benefits of films formed via Continuous Assembly of Polymers in various applications such as device fabrication.
