Organic semiconductors have been an increasingly popular subject in fundamental and applied research for several decades. Polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons are currently among the most widely studied systems due to their unique electronic structures and tailorability. Particular attention has been paid to the linear PAHs, pentacene, due to its highly desirable electronic properties, such as its remarkably high charge carrier mobility. However, pentacene is chemically unstable as its readily reacts with O2 as a result its linear extended conjugation of annulated rings. We have developed a new class of organic semiconductor materials, namely, materials that form an additional Clar sextet that results in chemical stability. These semiconductor materials are ideal for studying charge transport and for structure-property studies. We refer to these PAHs as “Bisoligoacenes”. These molecules can be chemically tuned to exhibit solubility, changes in crystal structures, absorption length specificity, and chemical stability. For example, we have the ability of tuning the dimensionality (1-D vs. 2-D) of these materials by chemically modifying the periphery of the semiconductor skeleton. Carrier mobilities as large as 6.0 cm2/Vs have been achieved in our materials.
