Scientific and engineering careers provide some of the greatest outlets for creativity, discovery, and fulfillment. Inspiration for addressing the world’s health problems can range from very personal experiences and interactions with others in need to the broader excitement of having a very real impact on the current constraints of modern medicine by engineering new and better approaches, or enabling existing technologies to be more effective. There is a strong need those of us who have been trained in the chemical sciences and engineering to lend our expertise to the medical community, and a great deal of satisfaction that can be born from interactions with work at the clinical interface. Although there are many challenges to seeking a career in a field that can be both inspiring and, at times, quite challenging, there are also strategies and perspectives that can help provide grounding and leverage efforts toward success.
