As young chemists, we are trained to critically analyze data to develop a better understanding of the physical world. The critical thinking of scientists can be used to solve not only technological challenges, but also societal problems. In an emotionally driven political environment, the analytical skills of scientists can discern unbiased and reliable facts from a vast supply of politically motivated information. Drawing on the personal experience as an early career chemist working as a Congressional staffer, I will discuss how to navigate the cultural differences between scientists, politicians, federal government and the general public. By building trusts and understanding your audience, young scientists can communicate reliable, relevant, and targeted information to effectively contribute to public policy as a citizen, a stakeholder, or a Washington, DC insider.
