On reflection, my training as a chemist is a common thread in a science, technology and policy career that cut across academia, the private sector, four US government agencies, several senior White House assignments, and leadership positions at the International Energy Agency and The World Bank Group. Affordable access to clean energy, environment and public health, sustainable economic development, international affairs and national security issues all offer great opportunities and challenges for chemists with an appetite to shape our common future. I will share some of my experiences and insights with the hope of encouraging the next generation of chemists to embrace and achieve their professional career potential by addressing the urgent mission of improving humankind.
