Scientists have long been able to collaborate across borders where other diplomatic efforts have broken down, and the American Chemical Society is well versed in this. An excellent example of chemists and chemical engineers working together across borders is the Global Chemists' Code of Ethics (GCCE). In April 2016, the ACS convened over 30 chemists from 18 countries to create the GCCE. This science-driven, practitioner-based code will be used by chemists and related scientists and engineers all over the world to educate and raise awareness about the importance of responsible science and chemistry ethics. A series of workshops have been held around the world to educate early career chemists and chemical engineers in ethical topics and disseminate the GCCE through a train-the-trainer system. It is estimated that over 7,000 people will be trained in the GCCE and ethics related topics when the project concludes at the end of 2017. This presentation will discuss the GCCE as an example of science diplomacy, present the outcomes of the follow-up workshops, and discuss next steps. The GCCE project is made possible through a grant from the U.S. Department of State and in collaboration with the Organization for the Prohibition of Chemical Weapons, Pacific Northwest National Laboratories, and other partner entities.
