Amine modified porous silicates are highly versatile materials.  We have explored synthesis-structure-property relationships for these materials in the separation of organic species from gas or liquid phases, CO<sub>2</sub> capture and in catalysis.  Catalysts based on discrete molecular amines that act as basic sites have been employed in reactions of importance in synthetic organic chemistry such as aldol condensations and related reactions.  The cooperative interactions of these amines with acids derived from organic groups or from the silicate surface effectively enhance the rate of these reactions compared to base-only catalysis.  Similar materials are demonstrated to be useful supports for metal nanoparticles that offer outstanding performance in the semi-hydrogenation of alkynes into cis-alkenes, whereby the amines cooperatively interact with Pd nanoparticles to impact catalytic selectivity.  Cooperativity, whereby multiple sites or species simultaneously interact with substrates or intermediates in reactions, is a hallmark of catalysis.<br/>
