Laurie is the Acting Associate Director for Laboratory Programs (ADLP) at the National Institute of Standards and Technology (NIST) where she provides direction and operational guidance for NIST's scientific and technical mission-focused laboratory programs and serves as principal deputy to the Under Secretary of Commerce for Standards and Technology and NIST director. Laurie is an accomplished scientist and inventor who has risen through the ranks to become the first female Director for the NIST Material Measurement Laboratory and the first women to sit in the chair of ADLP at NIST.  She is also the recipient of the 2017 Earle B. Barnes Award for Leadership in Chemical Research Management, and is a passionate about promoting women’s advancement into leadership positions in the science and technology fields.  This symposium is organized in honor of this award to recognize, promote and encourage female leaders in science and technology and to frame the discussion of a more inclusive culture that draws women and other underrepresented minorities into leadership positions.<br/>
