Metal organic frameworks (MOFs) are regarded as promising candidates for CO2 carbon sequestration. Zeolitic imidazolate frameworkes (ZIFs) are a class of MOFs that are produced from the coordination of tetrahedral metal ions with imidazolates. In this study, a covalent functionalization strategy was developed to prepare new type of ZIFs by imparting a carbonyl group on C2 of imidazole ring. We post-synthesized different parent ZIFs such as ZIF-7, ZIF-8, ZIF-20, ZIF-21, and ZIF-22 through oxidation of the targeted place on the imidazolate rings. The IR patterns suggest that carbonyl group has been imparted on the linkers with a peak around 1700 cm-1 for ZIF-7, ZIF-21, and ZIF-22 after functionalization. The NMR analysis on the parent ZIFs before and after functionalization showed that the linkers in ZIF-21 and ZIF-22 have been functionalized 40 and 50 %, respectively. Additionally, changes in NMR spectroscopy of functionalized ZIF-7 can be attributed to the presence of carbonyl group on the imidazole ring. These results show the successful functionalization of ZIF-7, ZIF-21, and ZIF-22 for improving the CO2 capture capacity accompanied by slight changes in CH4, H2, and N2 capture capacity. The developed method can significantly advance low-cost carbon capture and storage and help alleviate the threats from global climate change
