Lignocellulosic biomass has been considered as a viable source of renewable liquid transportation fuel through the catalytic upgrading of fast pyrolysis bio-oil. However, due to the fast pyrolysis bio-oil’s thermal instability, multi-step catalytic processes need to be employed to allow long-term continuous operation. Catalyst and process development are important components to ensure that the estimated cost of the scaled-up process will be within the target cost goal for the technology. Here, we present the progress done at the Pacific Northwest National Laboratory for the conversion of lignocellulosic biomass into renewable hydrocarbons. Efforts to improve the catalyst lifetime as well as lower the catalyst cost impact on the overall cost of the process are discussed. The role of techno-economic analysis of the technology will also be highlighted.<br/>
