Nickel precatalysts have emerged as an alternative to palladium precatalysts for Suzuki-Miyaura coupling reactions.  They have shown increased activity for the coupling of phenol-derived electrophiles, a class of substrates that can be synthesized from cheap and ubiquitous phenolic starting materials.  Mechanistic studies of precatalyst activation and careful investigation of the nickel species present during catalysis has improved understanding of the active form of nickel during catalysis.  Insights from these studies have lead to changes in the bidentate phosphine supporting ligand and the ancillary ligands on the precatalyst resulting in improvements in reactivity and substrate scope.
