Strict emission laws create challenges for current diesel oxidation catalyst (DOC) technologies. This study focuses on the synthesis, characterization, and reactivity of various Pt-Pd alloyed compositions over a variety of hydrothermal modified alumina supports. The benefits of using a rational synthesis technique, such as Strong Electrostatic Adsorption (SEA), over a typical dry impregnation synthesis technique include smaller nanoparticles, tighter particle size distribution, and increased uniformity of alloyed shape and composition. Catalyst evaluation was performed at the Fuels, Engines, and Emissions Research Center at ORNL using the USDRIVE low-temperature combustion of diesel protocol. Light-off temperatures of gas species for catalysts at different stages of simulated ageing were measured using a GC/MS.<br/><br/>The bimetallic catalysts synthesized by SEA exhibited initial high dispersion (XRD particle size &lt;1.5nm) across the commercially modified alumina supports. Moreover, the particle size distribution was narrow which allows easier comparisons across the series of Pt:Pd compositions (1:0, 3:1, 1:1, 1:3, 0:1). XRD patterns of the aged catalysts showed various amounts of sintering and oxide formation across the Pt:Pd ratios and different modified alumina supports. Catalyst activity was dependent on Pt content, with many of the catalysts having T<sub>90</sub>’s under 200°C after prolonged treatments at 700°C.
