Organic Light Emitting Diodes (OLEDs) are a class of light emitting devices that have the potential to deliver light with high efficiency and color purity for displays or general lighting applications. Phosphorescent transition metal complexes could offer 100% external quantum efficiency, however, higher performances from high emission energy complexes are needed.  More stable, deep blue emitting metal complexes are needed to generate pure blue and white light in completely solution processed devices. Blue emitting homo- and heteroleptic Iridium (III) complexes bearing both arylimidazole and phenylpyridine ligands were synthesized and their photophysical properties characterized. With the aim of a fully solution processable emitting layer, OLED devices were fabricated. Device performances were correlated with emitter structure and photoluminescence quantum yield.
