The popular molecular visualization application Jmol (aka JSmol) has a long history of providing free public access to the visualization of molecular structrures. In 2007, Jmol developers and database developers began an era of unprecedented cooperation that has led to innumerable educational and research feature enhancements in Jmol. Many of these enhancements involved the application programming interfaces (APIs) of major US public chemical data services. The purpose of this presentation is to illustrate these database-related Jmol enhancements with an emphasis on the NCI/CADD Chemical Identifier Resolver, RCSB, PubChem, and NIST WebBook. The presentation will focus on chemical education examples. It will also explore the use of public database APIs as bridges to other data sources. Symposium participants will be able to follow presentation examples on laptops or tablets.
