After a molecule absorbs a photon and dissociates, the resulting vector correlations reveal the dynamics of getting from the parent molecule to products. We have implemented an experiment that uses a velocity-mapped ion imaging apparatus and polarized lasers to determine the vector correlations in the photodissociation of a number of NO-containing molecules. This talk will describe several photodissociation studies from small molecules to metal-containing compounds. We also perform electronic structure calculations to uncover the orbital interactions and energies important in the observed behavior. The presentation will also highlight recent results from DC slice imaging that increases the number of potential experiments and simplifies the analysis.
