Gold nanorods are coated in silica shells of different thicknesses, which are functionalized with fluorophores via a (3-Aminopropyl)trimethoxysilane linker. These particles are utilized in a super-resolution imaging technique, where the attached fluorescent dye molecules are excited using a laser. As individual dye molecules fluoresce, the intensity and location of resulting emissions are recorded. Obtained location data is used to map out the structure of the dye molecules bound to the silica coated gold nanorod. Comparisons of reconstructed images of rods with silica coatings of different thickness lend insight as to the effect of rod-dye spacing on previously observed coupling between dye fluorescence and the plasmon modes of the gold nanorods.
