Metal-organic frameworks (MOFs) have become increasingly popular in recent years for a variety of applications, including adsorption and catalysis, due to their modular nature and inherent porosity. We recently reported the successful synthesis of Zr-MOFs, UiO-66 and UiO-66-NH2, in acetone affording complete and facile activation directly from the synthesis product without the need for a solvent activation step. Herein, we report the effect of solvent molecule “guests” in the pores of activated UiO-66-NH2 synthesized from acetone by evaluating the chlorine gas uptake and half-lives for methyl paraoxon hydrolysis of samples loaded with saturation levels of guest molecules. In addition, the gas phase reactivity of UiO-66-NH2 with 2-chloroethyl ethyl sulfide was assessed using the acetone synthesized material. HKUST-1 was also tested with the same set of solvents and evaluated against ammonia gas, which chemisorbs to the coordinatively unsaturated copper sites.
