This work investigated the application Deep Eutectic Solvents (DES) for extracting lignin from herbaceous biomass with high yield and high purity. DES mixture prepared with choline chloride and hydrogen-bond donor of lactic acid (molar ratio 1:2) was evaluated for treatment of wheat straw, and the influence of reaction time and temperature on lignin yield, purity, and chemical structure were determined. It was found that DES can selectively cleave ether linkages and facilitate lignin removal from biomass feedstock, and the extracted lignin has a distribution of size in 60~100nm. Moreover, the mechanism of DES cleavage of ether bonds between phenylpropane units will be elucidated. The selectivity of DES extraction toward G or S subunits was also investigated.
