The determination of the electronic structure of transition metal active centers is critical information for the understanding of many proteins and enzymes. However, for example access to bonding and reaction properties related to the valence state of the transition metal ion is often difficult to address directly.<br/>X-ray spectroscopy offers powerful tools to address such information due to the site selectivity of the various methods. The hard X-ray based method of resonant inelastic X-ray scattering (1s2p RIXS) offers a detailed insight into the electronic structure and allows the study of systems in difficult conditions with the resolution of soft X-ray absorption spectroscopy. [1]<br/>Here, this presentation serves two goals: (a) the introduction of 1s2p RIXS with its advantages and challenges for systems in different geometries, and (b) the extraction of bonding properties for the example of cytochrome c through experiment and theory.
