Thermo and magneto dual-responsive polymer-tethered magnetite nanoparticle materials gained popularity in drug delivery, bio-separation, artificial muscle and actuators. Nitrocatechol derivatives can serve as irreversible binding anchors for magnetite nanoparticles due to their increased acidity compared to catechol derivatives. Herein, a thermo and magneto dual-responsive poly(nitrodopamine methacrylate-co-N-isopropyl acrylamide) (P(NDMA-co-NIPAM))-Fe3O4 nanoparticle composite was developed. Fe3O4 nanoparticles (diameter = 6 nm) were dispersed in P(NDMA-co-NIPAM) (containing 10 % of nitrodopamine moieties) methanol solution. P(NDMA-co-NIPAM)-Fe3O4 composite film formed after solvent was evaporated at room temperature. P(NDMA-co-NIPAM)-Fe3O4/methanol suspension was two times more stable than P(DMA-co-NIPAM)-Fe3O4/methanol suspension under the influence of a permanent magnet. The P(NDMA-co-NIPAM)-Fe3O4 composite could not be disintegrated using dopamine methacrylate while poly(dopamine methacrylate-co-N-isopropyl acrylamide) (P(DMA-co-NIPAM))-Fe3O4 composite dissolved after it was treated with nitrodopamine methacrylate displaying enhanced stability of P(NDMA-co-NIPAM)-Fe3O4 composite compared to P(DMA-co-NIPAM)-Fe3O4 composite. The obtained composite exhibited thermo, magneto dual-responsive feature. When the temperature rose from 4 oC to 60 oC, the diameter of the composite in water contracted from 18 mm to around 13 mm. The movement of the composite can be controlled using a permanent magnet.
