The development of catalysts for the efficient, cost-effective and more environmentally-benign conversion of alkanes to oxygenates would be highly desirable. An example of a valuable oxygenate is hexanedioic (adipic) acid, the precursor of important polymers such as Nylon-6,6. Our experimental results show usage of a pincer-ligated Ir(III) catalyst can oxidize KA oil or cyclohexane to adipic acid, using molecular oxygen as the oxidant. Efforts toward optimization of this aerobic oxidation system and mechanistic studies will be presented.
