It has been known for decades that exogenous metal additives (including Lewis acids) can have a beneficial influence on organometallic transformations, and yet the mechanistic roles of these additives are rarely studied. In order to better understand the influence of additives on catalytic cycles, two strategies are being pursued. In the first approach we are using a mechanistic hypothesis to guide reactivity studies. By exploring the electronic effects of Lewis acids on group 10 acyl complexes, the reactivity of these functional groups in the presence of Lewis acids can be better understood. In the second approach we are exploring reactivity patterns in organotransition metal catalysis with the ultimate goal of establishing a mechanistic role of various metal additives, including catalytic reactions of Ag and Pd.
