<br/>There has been a long association between producers of industrial polysaccharides and manufacturers of paper paperboard. Various gums and starches, with and without modification and modified celluloses are used as additives in the paper making process and in the manufacture of finished paper and paperboard, including polysaccharides that serve as the vehicles for inks and coatings. However, most of these applications are decades old. Consequently, it is difficult to find novel examples of industrial carbohydrate. Thus, this presentation will focus on one such novel example that has been developed and commercialized over the past twenty years: the development and commercial production of Fire Standards Compliant “FSC” cigarette paper, which is also known as banded cigarette paper. The development of such papers was the result of the Fire Safe Cigarette Cigarette Act of 1990, and a drive by state officials to reduce the number of deaths associated with fires caused by cigarettes that did not self-extinguish when consumed. The first cigarette with FSC paper was introduced in 2000 with the Merit brand-styles using a cellulose-banded technology. Also, in 2000, New York state passed legislation requiring all cigarettes in sold in that state be FSC compliant (by ASTM E2187, Standard Test Method for Measuring the Ignition Strength of Cigarettes) beginning July 1 2004. At least two other banding technologies were used on the FSC compliant cigarettes sold in New York: bands based on sodium alginate and bands based on a food-grade oxidized corn starch. Banding formulas can contain other ingredients such that have the potential for chemical reactions with the polysaccharides. Also, It has been reported that banding materials can applied as distinct layers using gravure printing technology. As a result providing an understanding of the chemistry of these papers before fabrication, after the paper has been in contact with the tobacco in a cigarette, and after the band has been in contact with the smoke stream has been difficult to obtain. Conventional analytical techniques have not shown promise as the composition of the banded areas, taken as a whole, is very similar to the underlying paper. One technique that has shown promise is terahertz spectroscopy; and in this presentation, spectral interpretations based on the underlying chemistry will be discussed.
