The IrIII complex (dmPhebox)Ir(OAc)2(H2O) (dmPhebox=2,6-bis(4,4-dimethyloxazolinyl)-3,5-dimethylphenyl) was reported to undergo alkane dehydrogenation at 200 0C forming a novel IrIII-hydride complex and free alkene, 1-2 rather than alkane C-H activation at 80-160 0C in the reaction with alkane. 3-4 Different carboxylate with different R group in the compounds of (dmPhebox)Ir(CO2R)2(H2O) might result in different reactivity since the affinity of the acetate to iridium is affected. Herein a series of iridium carboxylate complexes (dmPhebox)Ir(CO2R)2(H2O) (R=Me, t-Bu, Et, CH2Ph, (CH3)2CCH ) have been synthesized and their reactivity with octane has been studied at 200 0C. The results showed different reactivity of (dmPhebox)Ir(CO2R)2(H2O) with octane in the order of R= (CH3)2CCH &gt;&gt; t-Bu &gt; Et &gt; Me &gt;&gt; CH2Ph. For the reaction of (dmPhebox)Ir(CO2R)2(H2O) (R= CH2Ph) with octane, after 11 days, there were tiny octene peaks on the 1H-NMR spectrum, with about 30% conversion by the GC analysis. The reactivity of C-H activation with octane at lower temperature (80-160 0C) with these complexes (dmPhebox)Ir(CO2R)2(H2O) (R=Me, t-Bu, Et, CH2Ph, (CH3)2CCH ) will also be studied.
