The transformation of abundant alkanes to value-added organic compounds is a reaction with tremendous applicability. This presentation focuses on our recent efforts to design molecular transition metal catalyst systems for alkane transformation, including: (i) the development of iridium complexes of “hybrid” phosphinothious/phosphinite pincer ligands for highly efficient catalytic transfer dehydrogenation of alkanes;<sup> </sup> (ii) terminal, regioselective silylations of alkanes using a combination of a Ir dehydrogenation catalyst and a bis(imino)pyridine Fe catalyst that is active for tandem olefin isomerization and <i>anti</i>-Markovnikov hydrosilylation of terminals olefins; (iii) the application of Goldman-Brookhart alkane metathesis strategy for degradation of polyethylenes.
