Bacterial nanocellulose (BNC) is a kind of pure cellulose, which is a high value-added product obtained by cultivation of bacteria, principally Gluconacetobacter xylinus. Lignocellulosic biomass serves as a potential feedstock for production of BNC, and is a low-cost raw material. The performance of three nanocellulose-producing strains was compared together with an often-used model strain G. xylinus ATCC23770 in lignocellulose-derived inhibitors added culture media. The selected inhibitors for this study were two common furan aldehydes, namely furfural and 5-hydroxymethylfurfural, together with two typical aromatic compounds, vanillin and coniferyl aldehyde. These compounds have been suggested to give a greater contribution to the inhibition of G. xylinus as compared to several other potential inhibitors in lignocellulosic hydrolysates in our previous work. In this work, difference in performance of the four strains has been observed with addition of the inhibitors in culture media, which indicated different tolerance of the strains. At the end of cultivation, the concentrations of inhibitors and their corresponding oxidation/reduction products were analyzed. The results obtained from this study give interesting information of different performance of the various cellulose-producing strains when cultured on the lignocellulose-derived furan aldehydes and aromatic compounds at first time. A better understanding of these effects will benefit selecting a suitable strain and will facilitate the development of robust processes for production of BNC from lignocellulosic resources.
